Custom Metal Range Hoods for Kitchen Remodels in Reno & Lake Tahoe

A kitchen remodel in the Reno-Tahoe area almost always involves the range hood — and increasingly, that means going custom. Stock hoods from big-box stores look like stock hoods. A custom metal range hood becomes the visual anchor of the kitchen and ties into the mountain-home aesthetic that defines this region.

We fabricate custom range hoods at our Reno shop for homeowners, interior designers, and contractors working on projects from downtown Reno lofts to Martis Camp estates.

Materials and Finishes

Hot Rolled Steel

Hot rolled steel is the most requested material for custom range hoods in the Reno-Tahoe market. The natural mill scale creates an organic, mottled finish with blue-grey and rust tones that varies from piece to piece. Each hood is unique. The surface is sealed with a clear coat to stabilize the patina while preserving the raw character of the steel.

Blackened Steel

For a more uniform dark finish, blackened steel provides a deep, matte-black appearance. It works well in modern mountain kitchens where the design calls for dark metals against light stone or wood. The blackening process is a chemical patina, not paint — it develops depth and subtle variation up close.

Brushed Stainless Steel

Brushed stainless is the classic choice for contemporary and transitional kitchens. It's durable, easy to maintain, and pairs cleanly with professional-grade cooktops and built-in appliances.

Copper and Zinc

Copper hoods develop a living patina over time, shifting from bright penny tones to deep brown and eventually verdigris in certain conditions. Zinc follows a similar path with a cooler, silver-grey patina. Both materials make a statement and age beautifully in kitchens that embrace natural materials.

Common Hood Shapes

Tapered hoods are the most popular shape — wider at the base where they meet the cooking surface, narrowing as they rise toward the ceiling or vent. This classic silhouette works in both traditional and modern kitchens.

Barrel hoods have a curved front face that softens the profile. They're common in kitchens with arched doorways or curved design elements.

Flat-front hoods feature clean vertical lines and a flat or slightly angled face. This is the go-to for modern and minimalist kitchen designs.

Chimney-style hoods extend from the cooking surface to the ceiling with a stepped profile — wider at the base, transitioning to a narrower stack. They suit kitchens with high ceilings and exposed beams.

Sizing and Ventilation

A custom hood needs to cover the full width of the cooktop — ideally extending 3 inches beyond each side. Depth should match the range. Height above the cooking surface depends on the fuel type and ventilation CFM, but 30 to 36 inches is the typical range for residential gas cooktops.

We build the hood shell to your dimensions and design. The ventilation insert — blower, filters, lighting — is typically specified separately by the kitchen designer or contractor. We fabricate around the insert dimensions you provide.

How to Order a Custom Range Hood

To quote a custom hood, we need the width, depth, and height dimensions, the desired material and finish, the shape or a reference image, and the ventilation insert make and model so we can accommodate it in the fabrication. If you're working with a kitchen designer, they'll typically have all of this dialed in. If you're a homeowner working directly with us, we can walk you through the process.
