Weathering Steel (Corten) for Outdoor Design in Reno & Lake Tahoe

Weathering steel — commonly known by the brand name Corten — has become one of the most sought-after materials in outdoor design across the Reno-Tahoe region. The warm orange-brown patina develops naturally through controlled oxidation, creating a surface that looks like it belongs alongside stone, timber, and the natural landscape of the Sierra foothills.

Unlike regular steel that rusts and degrades, weathering steel forms a stable oxide layer that actually protects the underlying metal. The rust is the finish.

How Weathering Steel Works

Weathering steel contains small amounts of copper, chromium, and phosphorus that cause the oxidation layer to bond tightly to the surface rather than flaking off. After the initial weathering period — typically six months to two years depending on climate exposure — the patina stabilizes and the corrosion rate drops dramatically.

In the dry climate of the Reno valley, the patina develops more slowly than in wetter regions. At higher elevations around Tahoe, where moisture is more consistent through winter and spring, the patina comes in faster and more evenly. Either way, the end result is the same: a rich, warm surface that requires zero maintenance.

Popular Outdoor Applications

Landscape Walls and Edging

Corten retaining walls, garden borders, and landscape edging are the most common residential application in our market. The material holds clean lines, handles ground contact, and provides a warm visual transition between hardscape and planting. Landscape architects and designers across the Reno-Tahoe region spec Corten extensively for this purpose.

Fire Pits and Fire Features

Custom Corten fire pits and fire rings work both aesthetically and functionally. The steel handles the heat without issue, and the rusted surface complements the flame. We fabricate square, round, rectangular, and custom-shaped fire features to fit specific outdoor spaces.

Planters

Corten planters provide a clean, modern vessel for landscaping. They're particularly popular at entries, along pathways, and on patios where the warm tones of the steel contrast with green plantings and grey stone.

Sculpture and Art

Weathering steel is a favorite material for outdoor sculpture — both for professional artists and for decorative pieces like address numbers, screen panels, and custom signage. Our plasma cutting table handles intricate designs in Corten sheet.

Fencing and Privacy Screens

Corten panels — solid or with cut patterns — create striking privacy screens and fence sections. The material weathers uniformly, never needs painting, and ages into the landscape rather than degrading like wood fencing.

Thickness and Structural Considerations

For landscape walls and retaining applications, 3/16-inch or 1/4-inch plate provides structural rigidity. For decorative panels, planters, and fire features, 14-gauge or 11-gauge sheet is typically sufficient. Thicker material weathers more slowly but lasts proportionally longer.

Weathering steel should be kept off direct ground contact where standing water accumulates — the wet-dry cycle that creates the patina needs the "dry" part to work properly. Base plates or gravel beds prevent prolonged immersion.

Rust Runoff

During the initial weathering period, rain and snowmelt washing over the surface will carry rust particles. This can stain concrete, light-colored stone, and paving. Plan for this during installation — orient drainage away from surfaces that would show staining, or install the pieces before surrounding hardscape is finished.

Once the patina stabilizes, runoff is minimal.

Custom Fabrication in Reno

We cut, bend, and weld weathering steel at our Dickerson Road shop. From landscape panels to fire features to architectural accents, we work from your dimensions and drawings — or collaborate with your landscape architect or designer to develop the pieces.
