Range Hood Shell vs Ventilation Insert: Planning a Reno Kitchen

A custom range hood shell is the visible metal enclosure. The ventilation insert is the working appliance inside it, with the blower, filters, lights, controls, and duct connection. Select the exact insert first, then size the shell, framing, duct, electrical, and mounting plan around its current manufacturer specifications.

What does the metal fabricator build?

The fabricator builds the decorative hood structure to the approved shape and dimensions. That can be a clean tapered hood, a box form, a curved face, or a design with bands, seams, or rivets. The shell may be hot rolled or blackened steel, copper, zinc, or stainless, depending on the design.

The shell is not a substitute for a listed ventilation appliance. Pro Form Metals fabricates the hood in its Reno shop and coordinates liner, mounting, clearance, electrical, and ductwork details with the contractor or installer. The company does not install the hood.

What comes with the ventilation insert?

The insert typically contains the functional parts used to capture, filter, light, and move cooking exhaust. Exact features vary by manufacturer and model. The specification sheet shows the insert's outside dimensions, cutout or mounting needs, duct connection, electrical information, and other installation instructions.

Don't use a retail listing screenshot as the final specification. Send the current manufacturer document for the exact model and width. Similar model names can cover different sizes or blower arrangements. A late insert change may force changes to the shell depth, bottom opening, support, or duct location.

Who decides the airflow and duct plan?

The kitchen designer, appliance supplier, mechanical contractor, and installer should coordinate the appliance selection and ventilation design. Cooking equipment, duct route, duct size, blower arrangement, makeup air, clearances, and local requirements are not established by the decorative shell alone.

The useful handoff to the fabricator is an approved insert and a coordinated set of dimensions. Mark the duct centerline, direction of discharge, available framing, electrical location, and any service access the insert instructions require. If one of those items is still open, label it before the shell is released.

How do shell dimensions relate to the kitchen?

The shell has to fit the appliance plan and the room. Record the cooktop or range model, finished ceiling height, hood bottom elevation, cabinet opening, and shell width, depth, and height. Include tile thickness, cabinet end panels, crown, beams, and any soffit that changes the finished opening.

A front elevation communicates width and taper. A side elevation shows depth and projection. Both should agree with the insert sheet. Our custom range hood style guide helps define the visible shape, while the kitchen hood service page explains materials and quote preparation.

Coordination checklist for a Reno kitchen

  • Exact range or cooktop manufacturer and model
  • Exact ventilation insert model and current specification sheet
  • Finished ceiling height and cabinet opening
  • Approved hood bottom elevation
  • Shell width, depth, height, and shape
  • Insert opening and mounting requirements
  • Duct size, centerline, route, and discharge direction
  • Framing and mounting support
  • Electrical and control locations
  • Required service access
  • Metal, finish, bands, seams, and visible details
  • Written approval from the responsible project team before fabrication

Local remodel teams can also review the Reno service area page when coordinating a shop-built hood.

Frequently asked questions

Does a custom hood include the blower?

The decorative shell and ventilation insert are separate parts of the plan. Confirm exactly what the appliance supplier and fabricator are providing before ordering.

Can I change the insert after the shell is built?

Only if the replacement fits every relevant dimension and requirement. A change can require shell or support modifications, so check with the fabricator and installer first.

Who installs the custom shell and insert?

Pro Form Metals does not install the hood. Coordinate installation, ductwork, electrical work, clearances, and appliance setup with qualified contractors.
