Custom Metal Signage for Northern Nevada Businesses & Properties
A metal sign says something about who you are before anyone walks through the door. It communicates permanence, quality, and attention to detail in a way that vinyl banners and plastic channel letters never will. Whether it is a storefront on Virginia Street in Reno, a ranch gate off Highway 395, or an address marker on a custom home in Incline Village, fabricated metal signage is built to last decades in the harsh Northern Nevada climate.
We cut, bend, weld, and finish custom metal signs at our shop on Dickerson Road in Reno. Here is an overview of what we build and how the process works.
Types of Metal Signs We Fabricate
Metal signage covers a broad range of applications. The most common types we produce include:
- Dimensional letters -- individual metal letters and numbers that mount to a wall or facade with standoffs, creating shadow depth and a high-end look. Popular for offices, restaurants, and retail storefronts in the Reno-Sparks business corridors.
- Flat panel signs -- single-piece metal panels with cut-out lettering, etched graphics, or applied vinyl. Used for everything from directional signage to building identification.
- Monument signs -- freestanding ground-level signs typically mounted on a masonry or concrete base. Common at business park entrances, HOA communities, and commercial developments throughout Washoe County.
- Hanging and blade signs -- bracket-mounted signs that project from a building facade, visible to pedestrian and vehicle traffic. A staple in downtown Reno and Sparks commercial districts.
- Ranch and estate entrance signs -- large-format signs for property gates, driveways, and ranch entrances. These are some of our most custom pieces, often incorporating brand logos, silhouettes, or property names.
Material Options for Outdoor Signage
Material selection depends on the look you want, the environment the sign will live in, and your budget. We work with four primary metals for signage projects.
Mild steel is the most versatile option. It can be cut into intricate shapes, welded into three-dimensional forms, and finished with powder coat or paint in any color. Steel signs are heavy and substantial, which works well for monument signs and freestanding installations.
Aluminum is lighter than steel and naturally corrosion-resistant. It is the go-to material for wall-mounted signs, dimensional letters, and any application where weight is a concern. Aluminum takes powder coating well and holds up without rusting, even through Northern Nevada's wet spring seasons.
Corten steel develops a stable rust patina that protects the underlying metal from further corrosion. The weathered orange-brown finish looks intentional and fits the natural landscape of the Sierra Nevada region. Corten signs are popular for ranch entrances along the valleys between Reno and Carson City and for commercial properties that want a rustic-modern aesthetic.
Copper is a premium choice that develops a green patina over time. Copper signs are less common but make a strong statement on high-end residential properties and boutique commercial buildings. We see demand for copper address markers and small identification signs on custom homes around Lake Tahoe.
Laser Cutting and Plasma Cutting Capabilities
The precision of a metal sign depends on how it is cut. We use both laser cutting and plasma cutting depending on the material, thickness, and level of detail required.
Laser cutting produces the cleanest edges and allows for extremely fine detail -- small text, thin lines, and intricate logos all cut cleanly without secondary finishing. It is ideal for dimensional letters, detailed flat panel signs, and any application where the cut edge is visible.
Plasma cutting handles thicker materials and larger-format pieces efficiently. For heavy steel ranch signs or monument sign panels where the cut edge will be ground and finished, plasma is the practical choice. Both processes are CNC-controlled, so the output matches the design file exactly every time.
Powder Coating and Paint Finishes
Raw metal needs a finish to hold up outdoors. For most signage projects, we recommend powder coating. It is more durable than liquid paint, resists chipping and fading better, and provides a uniform finish across the entire piece. Powder coat is available in hundreds of colors, including metallic and textured finishes.
For Corten steel signs, the finish is the natural patina itself. We can accelerate the patina process so the sign arrives with an established weathered look, or we can deliver it raw and let it develop naturally over the first few months of exposure. Some clients want a clear coat applied over the patina to lock in a specific stage of the weathering -- we can do that as well.
For signs that need precise color matching -- corporate brand colors, for example -- we can spray liquid automotive-grade paint. This gives us exact Pantone matching capability that powder coat cannot always achieve.
Commercial Signage for Reno and Sparks Business Districts
Downtown Reno, Midtown, the Sparks industrial corridor, and the South Meadows business parks all have distinct signage needs. Midtown restaurants and shops tend toward blade signs and dimensional letters that fit the neighborhood's walkable character. Warehouse and industrial businesses along Glendale and Sparks Boulevard often need larger identification signs visible from the road.
We work directly with business owners, general contractors, and sign companies. If you have a design, we fabricate it. If you have a concept but no drawing, we can work from a sketch or description and produce a shop drawing for approval before cutting any metal. For multi-tenant buildings and business parks, we fabricate sign panels that match a consistent design standard while allowing individual tenant customization.
Ranch and Estate Entrance Signs
Northern Nevada has a long ranching tradition, and a well-built entrance sign is part of that identity. We fabricate ranch signs from heavy steel plate -- typically 3/16-inch to 1/4-inch thick -- cut to custom shapes that incorporate property names, cattle brands, wildlife silhouettes, or mountain profiles inspired by the Sierra Nevada skyline.
These signs mount to steel posts, stone pillars, or timber frames at the property entrance. They need to withstand high desert winds, snow loads in winter, and relentless sun exposure in summer. A properly fabricated and finished steel ranch sign will last a generation with zero maintenance. We build entrance signs for properties from the ranches south of Carson City to the estates scattered across Washoe Valley and up through the Truckee corridor.
Address Markers and House Numbers
Custom metal house numbers and address markers are one of the simplest ways to upgrade a home's curb appeal. We cut individual numbers and letters from aluminum or steel, finish them in powder coat or brushed metal, and supply them with mounting standoffs that create a floating effect off the wall surface.
For homes in Incline Village, Tahoe City, and mountain communities where visibility matters for emergency services, oversized address numbers in a high-contrast finish are a practical upgrade that also looks clean. We can match the font and finish to other metal details on the home -- railing hardware, light fixtures, or mailbox posts -- for a cohesive look.
Sign Permitting in Washoe County and Reno
Before fabricating a commercial sign, you need to know what your local jurisdiction allows. The City of Reno, City of Sparks, and Washoe County each have their own sign codes that regulate size, height, illumination, placement, and quantity. Reno's sign code, for example, limits the total sign area based on the linear footage of building frontage and restricts projecting signs in certain zoning districts.
We do not handle permitting directly, but we work with sign companies and contractors who do. What we can tell you is exactly what is feasible from a fabrication standpoint -- material thickness, structural mounting requirements, maximum panel sizes we can produce, and weight estimates for engineering calculations. If your sign designer or permit consultant needs fabrication specs for a permit application, we provide detailed shop drawings with dimensions, materials, gauges, and finish specifications.
